Governor of California Earl Warren was a guest at Knowles Hill in 1945. He came to dedicate Columbia State Park. Warren was elected California Governor three consecutive times. As Governor he capitalized on wartime tax surpluses rather than return them to the taxpayers. He was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in 1953 by President Eisenhower and unexpectedly took the Court and the Country in a new direction. Eisenhower later said that Warren's appointment was "the biggest mistake I ever made."
